Pathways to write
In Key Stage 2, our Mastery for writing approach applies The Literacy Company – Pathways to Write Methodology. This scheme, and our teaching of writing from Year 3 through to Year 6, is based around ensuring consistency in the approach to teaching of writing and the associated vocabulary used by Teachers. Common language is threaded through the whole curriculum, not simply in an English lesson but throughout the wider curriculum. The benefit of this whole-school, carefully sequenced approach is that previous learning can be built on effectively, giving all our children the opportunity to become fluent, expressive, and confident writers.
Pathways is successful in engaging our children with the carefully selected quality texts. A noteworthy observation from monitoring of standards in writing has shown that our children are building writing confidence and can now write extensively more frequently. Our teachers benefit from implementing effective strategies to challenge Greater Depth writers and this scheme also enables writing to be accessible to all our SEND children.
Spelling
Pathways to Spell is a progressive spelling program which covers the whole KS2 National Curriculum spelling objectives which we use. It uses a five-stage learning model:
- Review: Revisit previously taught spelling objectives
- Explain: Explore new words and spellings
- Practice: Use new rules or patterns through activities
- Apply: Apply rules with greater independence within sentences
- Reflect: Think about strategies that helped new learning stick
Punctuation & Grammar
Pupils in all years are taught to use appropriate elements of spelling, grammar and punctuation based on the National Curriculum guidelines and our subject progression ladders. Both grammar and punctuation are integrated into writing lessons and emphasised when applying writing across the curriculum.
