Pastoral Support

My name is Mrs Evans and I have had the privilege of working at Sundorne Infant School and Nursery for over 25 years. I started as a TA then became a Learning Mentor. More recently I have been on the Pastoral Team delivering interventions to support children with emotions, bereavement and coping with anger. I also lead Nurture Groups which I thoroughly enjoy and find extremely rewarding, especially watching the children develop emotional strategies and coping skills.

Fostering strong relationships with children and their families is important to me. I am very passionate about working with families.

I am a good listener and I am always happy to help children find solutions for their worries. I am always available if you need someone to talk to.

When I am not at school I enjoy baking cakes, cycling, singing and amateur dramatics.

I look forward to a new academic year and meeting you all.

Evelyn has lived in Shrewsbury all her life and attended Sundorne Infant and Junior Schools. She has extensive experience working with children, young people, and families across a range of educational and community settings.

Her career includes roles within local schools, charitable organisations, and Sure Start, where she trained in a variety of approaches to support families with diverse needs. She has also worked at Severndale Specialist School, gaining valuable experience in specialist provision.

Evelyn later joined Sundorne Infant School as a Teaching Assistant and now serves as the Family Support Worker across both schools, providing guidance and support to children and their families.

My name is Mrs Cooper and I am part of the Pastoral Team at Harlescott Junior School. I feel fortunate and proud to have found myself a part of a fantastic team. I enjoy the positive, nurturing environment at this school which I feel reflects our school values.

I work with children throughout their school journey and my role includes supporting the children to understand, manage and reflect upon their emotions, carrying out interventions for children who may be experiencing changes in circumstances and supporting my colleagues to ensure each child’s emotional and physical needs are met to enable them to achieve in class.

I am a friendly face in school and one that children can trust and rely upon to advocate for them. I also run a Nurture class for small groups of children to provide more focused and tailored support to children’s needs, allowing them to explore learning, social situations and cultivate their interests in an alternate way. I absolutely adore my role; I enjoy building positive relationships with children and playing even just a small part in their school journey is very fulfilling

I have lived in Shrewsbury my whole life; I have 4 children and 3 cats, so my home is always full of life and there Is never a dull moment. I am relentlessly optimistic and am rarely ever without a smile on my face and a joke to tell. I love gardening and have far too many plants, I crochet, knit, draw, paint and enjoy just about anything craft related. I can often be found with a sudoku in one hand and a cup of tea in the other!

I am looking forward to a new school year, continuing working alongside the children already at HJS, and getting to know those who are just about to enter Year 3.

My name is Mrs. Evans, and I have had the pleasure of working at Harlescott Junior School for over 25 years.

I am part of the Pastoral Team now, but when I first started, I was a Teaching Assistant. I wanted to develop further and was asked to train to be a Learning Mentor, then I progressed further to become a Parent Support Adviser.

I enjoy supporting parents as well as their children, part of my role is working with children individually or in groups, interventions such as friendship skills, bereavement, developing self-esteem and awareness, problem solving and supporting my colleagues. I am very good at listening and helping children unpick issues they may face. I like to see children working hard in class and know that my time with them to find solutions has helped them feel much happier.

When I have free time, I make use of my National Trust membership and like to go on lots of walks to explore properties and enjoy the grounds. I especially enjoy visiting National Trust sites in Cornwall.

I love to read and when I can, I like to lose myself gardening which I find very therapeutic.

I am looking forward to another year of eager children wanting to learn and grow at Harlescott Junior School.

My name is Mr Capener and I am the Safeguarding Manager for both Sundorne Infant School and Harlescott Junior School.
I have worked here for over 8 years. Before this I was a Police Officer for 22 years here in Shrewsbury and before that I was in the Army for 12 years, where I did lots of travelling.

I do lots of different jobs in school but the main one I do is making sure children are safe, which I believe is important.

I also support the Pastoral Team and enjoy spending time with children, talking and listening to them to help with their worries or concerns, no matter how big or small. I understand that we all need help at different times in our lives and part of my job involves speaking to other people who may be able help children and families.

Outside of school I enjoy travelling and spending time with my family. I am a keen runner and completed the London Marathon this year which was an amazing challenge and experience.

I very much look forward to continue helping and supporting children and their families in the new academic year.

My name is Miss Milward and I have had the joy of working at Harlescott Junior School for 19 years. I am part of the Pastoral Team at Harlescott Junior School. I deliver Nurture sessions for Year 5 and 6 pupils as well as Sensory Circuits. I like to visit classes and see that everyone is working well and settled nicely. I think it is important to follow school rules so everyone feels safe. I have lots of patience and I like to help children follow our school rules.

My Nurture classroom has a cosy and calm environment. Pupils are welcome to visit and work quietly on their classwork or to talk through any worries they have. It is good to talk things through and I am always ready to listen. I like to set my classroom up with activities that are fun such as painting, crafts, construction and even sensory fun. My door is always open and I will always help you out.

I have many things I enjoy and love to do at home such as meeting up with my family and friends, enjoying gardening and walking my dog.​

I am looking forward to spending quality time with all the Upper School children in the new academic year.
