Intent
Writing can be seen across our entire curriculum. It is our intention that our children leave us able to express themselves creatively and clearly through the written word. From their earliest writing experiences, we encourage our children to re-read and edit their own writing. As they improve their writing, our children focus on using vocabulary for precision, correct grammar, punctuation and spellings in order to achieve their potential. We set high expectations in presentation and encourage children to take great pride in their work at all times.
Implementation
Writing is immersed in every part of the curriculum in order for our children to recognise its value. Our children are given opportunities to express themselves in a variety of styles to match our themes. Formal writing lessons follow a clear teaching structure. Each writing unit is engaging with a meaningful reason to write and grammar is contextualised. Children, who need additional support, receive tailored interventions. Teachers receive CPD to enable them to offer an excellent writing curriculum.
Impact
The impact is clear to see: progress, sustained learning and transferrable skills. By the time they leave us, their writing journey is well established and they will be given opportunities to write for different genres. The teaching is thorough and children leave us well equipped for the next stage of their education. The consolidation of writing in other subjects allows greater understanding of how to use specific writing skills. Above all our children leave us with a growing confidence to meet new writing challenges with a ‘can do’ attitude.
