Intent
Our Science curriculum enables our children to learn about the nature of science, its processes and methods, and the use of science in the world. Children enjoy learning how science has changed our lives and how it is vital for the world’s future. This curriculum enhances our children’s natural curiosity through carefully sequenced lessons which embed all scientific enquiries thus allowing our pupils to work scientifically.
Implementation
The units we study reactivate prior knowledge, building a strong schema to support new learning. Children are encouraged to apply this knowledge when conducting practical investigations which all have a different working scientifically focus.
Impact
The structure of our science curriculum allows children to develop their substantive knowledge before applying this through disciplinary knowledge in a well sequenced curriculum. Children will be enthusiastic and confident scientists with a broad understanding of scientific knowledge and enquiry.
At Haughmond Schools, our curriculum offer ensures that children take part in at least three Science units in every year of the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. In Key Stage Two, children take part in five Science units plus an additional developing curiosity unit every year in the following areas:
- Early Years Foundation Stage: Forces, Materials and Plants
- Year 1: Animals inc. Humans, Materials and Plants
- Year 2: Animals inc. Humans, Living things and their habitats, Materials and Plants
- Year 3: Animals inc. Humans, Rocks, Forces, Plants and Light
- Year 4: Living things and their habitats, Sound, Electricity, Animals inc. Humans and States of matter
- Year 5: Earth and Space, Properties and changes of materials, Forces, Animals inc. Humans and Living things and their habitats
- Year 6: Living things and their habitats, Electricity, Light, Evolution and Inheritance and Animals inc. Humans.

Primary Science Quality Mark
Harlescott Junior School is proud to announce that it is one of 310 schools that has been awarded the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) in October 2025, a nationally recognised accreditation that celebrates a commitment to developing excellence in science leadership, curriculum design, teaching and learning.
Led by the University of Hertfordshire, for over a decade the Primary Science Quality Mark (PSQM) has been setting children on a path to a life filled with exciting possibilities and opportunities, by giving them access to a strong foundation in quality primary science education. Over 5,800 Quality Marks have now been awarded, impacting on the learning of over 1,000,000 children.
PSQM is a comprehensive, year-long professional development programme that equips primary science subject leaders with the knowledge, capability and support needed to raise the quality and profile of science across the whole school. At the heart of the programme is a structured development cycle that embeds critical reflection and promotes a culture of continuous improvement.
