At Haughmond Schools, we believe that learning a foreign language is a vital part of a broad and balanced education. It offers our pupils a rich educational, social, and cultural experience, helping them to develop communication skills, deepen their understanding of the world, and foster curiosity about other cultures.
We are proud to offer French as our chosen Modern Foreign Language, taught across Key Stage 2 only – this subject is not required in Key Stage 1. This approach allows our pupils to make progress in one language, building confidence and competence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Our subject leader has recently gathered Pupil Voice for this subject. It is clear that our Key Stage 2 children thoroughly enjoy these lessons.
Intent
Our curriculum is designed to:
- Broaden knowledge of an alternative culture
- Link knowledge of known places in another language
- Develop core skills in learning a new language
- Increase confidence in speaking a new language
- Provide an appropriate balance of enjoyment and challenge

- A linear approach is applied to gradually build upon knowledge
- Exciting opportunities promote a love of learning
- New vocabulary is shared in a variety of ways
