Within the Haughmond Schools, we promote a positive mindset towards Mathematics and a depth of understanding which can support their life experiences and future career choices. Children will gain conceptual knowledge, fluency with number facts and an ability to reason and problem solve so they are equipped for challenges with everyday Maths.
Implementation
The delivery of this curriculum will ensure:
A Mastery approach to Mathematics used. The incorporation of the White Rose Scheme of work has developed the quality of provision to ensure that all pupils receive quality first teaching. We immerse the children in mathematics through incidental learning opportunities, active learning sessions and inclusivity for all.
Impact
By delivering the curriculum in this way:
Children will be confident to reason, problem solve and be able to make links and use the most efficient method to solve any problems. They will learn through their mistakes and see these as an important part of their learning. These skills will enable the children to be confident with everyday Maths in the real world and successful in their chosen careers.
At Haughmond Schools we use a mastery approach to teaching Maths. To support this teaching approach we use the White Rose Maths scheme of work as our main resource alongside the NCETM and Magma Maths too. We have been working with the SHAW Maths Hub for many years to ensure we are offering the best possible professional development opportunities to our teachers for them to be skilled in teaching in a mastery way, this professional development runs from EYFS through to Y6. To support the Early Years framework in EYFS we also use the White Rose materials to support the teaching of the early skills to ensure there is a depth of understanding across those early objectives to enable children to develop a depth of learning as they move into KS1 and KS2. In KS1 and KS2 Numbots and TT Rockstars are used to support children in closing gaps in learning and rapid recall of their times tables. We encourage all children to be confident with having a go and exploring different ways to solve problems and to find effective and efficient methods to find answers, this comes from having a purposeful, encouraging and engaging environment and the belief that all children can achieve in Maths. Children at Haughmond Schools are actively encouraged to deepen their knowledge by the use of talk partners, group work and the expectation to be able to explain their mathematical thinking in a concrete (use of manipulatives), pictorial (draw their own pictures or representations) or abstract (their thoughts) way.
