Intent
Our history curriculum encourages children to be curious about the world around them. They are empowered with knowledge about British and world history, learning investigative and critical thinking skills which they can transfer across the curriculum. Our school values are reinforced through their developed understanding of tolerance, respect and caring through studying historical events. British values such as democracy are also explored within a historical context and related to modern day.
Implementation
Curiosity is fostered from the start with children being encouraged to handle artefacts and see visual images of items from the past or representations of events. Visits to museums and celebration events are organised to support children to have a lasting memory. As the children grow, they learn about historical events further away in time, so that their understanding is linked between historical periods. Vocabulary is selected to encourage children to be able to use specific words for each historical period.
Impact
We believe that as children progress through the history curriculum, they will be equipped with the historical knowledge and skills, that will enable them to be ready for the next phase of the history curriculum. Children will be able to talk about events that happened in the past and how these have impacted Britain and the world as we know it today. Discovery is planned to enable children to know key leaders, why settlement occurs and major conflicts throughout each year groups study.
