Design and Technology (DT)

Intent

For all children to experience a broad and balanced curriculum. We will also ensure progressive development of knowledge and skills, to learn to take risks and become resourceful through evaluations. Support is drawn from the D&T association and Projects on a Page resources.

Implementation

To encourage children to use their prior knowledge to try new ideas through trial and improvement. Children are to be given creativity to try things in a safe and purposeful environment. Adult support is available to scaffold children through designing, making, and evaluating.

Impact

To create enthusiastic and imaginative learners who have secure knowledge base. Children will use their creative thinking and problem-solving skills across the curriculum. Furthermore, will be able to recall knowledge of designers and apply this to their product.

At Haughmond Schools, we aim to teach children to become problem-solvers equipping them with the skills to think creatively about solutions. We provide clear progression through a well-planned and meaningfully sequenced D&T curriculum which builds on knowledge effectively and encourages independence, innovation and creativity. Through the acquisition of substantive and disciplinary knowledge, we intend to develop children’s creative, technical and imaginative thinking so that they can design, make and evaluate purposeful and functional products for a range of users.

Our curriculum offer ensures that children take part in three D&T projects every year in the following areas:

Key Stage One: Structures, Mechanisms, Textiles and Cooking & Nutrition

Key Stage Two: Structures, Mechanical Systems, Textiles, Cooking & Nutrition and Electrical Systems/Computing
All of these encompass a combination of the ‘design, make, evaluate process’ and focused practical tasks.
