Darwin Value Awards
At Haughmond Schools, we are proud to launch the Darwin Values Award, a personal development initiative inspired by the Severn Bridges Multi-Academy Trust. This challenge supports children in developing key life skills and character traits essential for lifelong learning and future success.
Through a wide range of experiences—including volunteering, learning new skills, physical challenges like riding a bike or scooter, and participating in school visits and residential trips—children build resilience, confidence, and independence.
The award also promotes British values, respect for protected characteristics, and healthy relationships, helping pupils become responsible, respectful, and active citizens.
As children progress through the award levels, they are recognised for their achievements and encouraged to reflect on their growth, preparing them for the transition to secondary school and beyond.

Penguin Award
The Reception Penguin Award celebrates children who embrace new experiences, develop important life skills and make a positive contribution to their school community.
Through activities such as helping others, taking part in sports and school events, learning practical skills, exploring the local environment and developing independence, children build confidence, resilience and a sense of responsibility.
The award encourages every child to become an active, kind and curious learner while fostering the personal skills and wellbeing needed for a successful start to their educational journey.
Iguana Award
The Year 1 and Year 2 Iguana Award encourages children to broaden their experiences, develop new skills and become active members of both the school and wider community.
Through volunteering, environmental projects, sports participation, charity events, outdoor learning and personal challenges, pupils build confidence, responsibility and resilience.
The award supports children in becoming independent learners who care for others, contribute positively to their community and develop the knowledge and wellbeing skills needed for future success.
Galapagos Award
The Year 3 and Year 4 Galapagos Award encourages pupils to become responsible, active and engaged citizens who make a positive difference to their school and wider community.
Through leadership opportunities, volunteering, sports participation, environmental projects, fundraising and learning new skills, children develop confidence, independence and resilience.
The award supports pupils in broadening their experiences, taking on greater responsibility and developing the knowledge, values and wellbeing skills needed to thrive both in school and beyond.
Beagle Award
The Year 5 Beagle Award inspires pupils to challenge themselves, explore the world around them and prepare for the opportunities and responsibilities of the future.
Through leadership and volunteering, sporting participation, residential experiences, environmental projects, charitable work and the development of new skills, pupils build resilience, confidence and independence.
The award encourages children to become responsible citizens who contribute positively to their community while developing the personal, social and wellbeing skills needed for the next stage of their education and beyond.
Bronze, Silver & Gold Award
The Year 6 Bronze, Silver and Gold Award is the pinnacle of our Darwin Award journey, recognising pupils who demonstrate leadership, commitment and personal growth during their final year at Haughmond Schools.
Through volunteering, community action, physical activity, environmental stewardship, charitable work, outdoor challenges and the development of new skills, pupils are encouraged to make a meaningful contribution both in and beyond school.
The progressive Bronze, Silver and Gold levels inspire children to challenge themselves, embrace responsibility and leave primary school as confident, resilient and aspirational young people who are well prepared for secondary education and future success.
Year 6 Darwin Values Awards Evening
We were delighted to celebrate our Year 6 pupils at this year’s Darwin Values Awards Evening at the end of the academic year.
The event brought together pupils, parents, carers and Year 6 staff for a special evening recognising the many ways our children have demonstrated the Darwin Values throughout their time at school. Every child received either a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award, celebrating their commitment, effort and achievements against the Darwin Values Award success criteria.
Our House Captains shared inspiring speeches about the activities and opportunities pupils had embraced as part of the award programme. Families enjoyed a simple buffet, fruit punch and a fun photo booth, creating lasting memories with friends and loved ones. A slideshow of photographs showcased the many exciting experiences and achievements from the children’s final year at school. It was a happy but emotional evening.
Each pupil received a beautiful certificate and a personal gift to mark this important milestone.
A huge well done to all of our Year 6 pupils. Thank you to everyone who helped make the evening such a memorable celebration.
