Intent
Our Art curriculum actively promotes contextualised learning whilst developing the understanding of building and developing skills from previous learning. Children will be given opportunities to explore the influence Art has on people’s lives. They will learn about a range of different artists and their inspiration through an inclusive learning environment whilst exploring specific vocabulary entwined through their art journey. Children will understand that the most important part of the learning journey is the skills developed rather than the finished product. Our curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst equipping them with the knowledge and skills to be able to experiment, invent and create their own works of art.
Implementation
Children are given the opportunity to plan, create, edit and discuss their own work, enabling them to take control and ownership of the task. Planning is based on previous experiences, with the support of Access Art, and is accessible to all children. Support is available where necessary for an inclusive curriculum to build and develop confidence along their art journey. Drawing is the concept which is taught at the beginning of each academic year which underpins additional units. Our curriculum combines practical, theoretical, and disciplinary knowledge for a complete art education throughout the years
Impact
The structure of our Art curriculum creates enthusiastic learners who can apply a range of techniques to different situations. The process will be clear throughout the Haughmond Schools and these embedded experiences will be remembered. Progression in their work as artists is shown in their sketch books. Children will be excited to explore Art and will develop different skills and mediums through a range of experiences. Teacher judgements are based upon a triangulation of work across sketchbooks, final pieces and teacher observation of the children’s work and conversations within the classroom. Our art curriculum will embrace and nurture a love of art to encourage a strong sense of creativity, reflection and exploration.
Haughmond Schools Art curriculum is inspired by a scheme from Access Art. This enables us to ensure that we deliver a rich, broad, balanced, diverse and engaging learning journey. Our curriculum is designed around the idea that art is more than a series of technical skills but one that nurtures creative thinking skills so that children learn through art as well as about art. Our intent is that by the time every child leaves here, they feel they have found an area of visual arts that is engaging to them.
Over the years, Haughmond Schools have closely worked with Rory McCann, a local mural artist, in our Art curriculum. He has developed bespoke tutorials for our woodland animals to use from EYFS straight through to the end of KS2. Around our building, Rory has also created fantastic murals linking with our ambitions, our school competitions, British woodland animals and well-known characters from our favourite books.
